Are you working this holiday week? How is your work-brain balance?
Many healthcare workers are working this holiday week. They are rushing, working doubles and trying to feel gratitude while eating Thanksgiving in the cafeteria. Thank you for all you do. Working in healthcare can be such an honor and can be challenging all at the same time. Maybe we need to think of how to balance our neurobiologic needs or “brain needs” and work? Why don’t we refer to work/brain balance more often? We talk about work/ life balance… that never made sense to me as I am living while I am working. The organ that needs more balance, while working, is the brain. The brain is the driver of all of our problem solving, focus and attention to the details at work. I do think we all need to go to “brain school” as a new professional and find the daily actions to help us focus, guard our attention and support our brains all day in the work day. What if we had a brain meter we could hold up and say .. oh we need more nutrition, sleep, hugs or positive emotions now.. I need to recharge! Our cars give us signals, our ice makers tell us when they are full or not, why not a brain meter? As working people our brain is the only reason we are there, it needs support throughout the day. There are daily actions to support it so we can come up with big ideas, feel positive and design our next steps professionally. The holiday season is a great time to start with work/brain balance!
This holiday week, please take time to pause and recharge.
Take time for a deep breath.
Take time for a hug.
Take time for a walk and a stretch.
Take time for a healthy meal.
Recharge. Renew.
