Where are you supposed to find the energy to navigate all the changes coming in rapid succession? Naps and hiding under the covers sound so good.
Rapid change, how to find zest for life in the confusion
Life is changing, super fast
What stays the same?
I have recently read 2 books that have helped me navigate rapid changes. The first book is called Switch Craft by a Psychology researcher named Elaine Fox, PhD and the other is Emotional Agility by another Psychologist, Susan David, PhD. I sure appreciate the Psychologist’s expertise these days filled with rapid change! They both align in their messages that the only certainty is uncertainty. We can build talents to navigate rapid change with intention. They both remind us that we are stewards of our own wellbeing where our skill building can help us navigate this complicated and unpredictable world. Great news right? Researchers study this stuff to help us all navigate these wild uncertainties and even the smaller ones. They both suggest that we can learn ways to build agility. We can start by finding out what is important to us now to help us focus. We can then gain a deeper understanding of emotions and how they are signals to what is important to us as well as our safety. They also suggest we can sustain fulfillment, curiosity and a zest for life. Sounds great right?
Where do we start by finding this zest for life stuff?
Is this zest for life stuff pie in the sky?
Both authors suggest we are able to pause, clarify what is important, navigate our own emotions and then use our intuition to “read the room”. Women tend to be great at the intuition or “read the room” skills. We tend to have innate skills towards other’s emotions, sometimes this is exhausting.
Few steps they both suggest:
1. Accept that change and uncertainty are inescapable.
Take notes from nature’ agility, we have built in tools to be agile.
We can work hard to become more open to new ways of doing things, to create sustainable wellbeing
I was on a walk today with my husband, it is still cold here in Ohio yet the sun was shining and creeks were running and we saw tiny signs of spring in the melting ice and snow and small plants popping up. Spring here is magical, we wait for this for months. I am taking notes from nature about how it has been resting for months yet it is slowly changing to grow anew. We can learn from this, take time to recharge so that you can sprout and build these sustainable skills of curiosity, agility and vitality. A zest for life awaits.
I am opening my WAG group again this week, my monthly membership for women docs, where we meet once a quarter, set our 3 bucket goal system in place (my personal goal setting system) and then map out one action a week to get closer to our dreams. We take the bull by the horns and use neuroscience based tools to focus, build support and intentionally leave an impact in this world. The time is now, times are changing. Figure out what is important to you now. Create the life that is meaningful. Let’s do this together, it is way more fun and successful with a team. One of the docs in the program now has surprised herself by how many action steps she has taken towards her dream. She has been thinking about this dream for a few years and has made actionable gains towards it since joining WAG. We are a joyful, intentional group. To join you need to have 20-30 min a week to put your fuzzy dreams into clear actions and find new friends while you do!
