Championing change is hard and is ongoing work. It is needed all year long. I wish it took one time yet our communities are in need each day.
“...change is not a one time event. You can’t shower once and hope to remain clean next year… Every individual and culture needs not a one time solution but a continual and constant championing of the positive. Stress and challenge are omnipresent in life; thus positive mindset, connection and hope need to be equally ubiquitous.”
Shawn Achor- Big Potential
Personal hygiene is a gift. We know this in medicine. We have all had patients, teenagers and those that are not able or willing to take care of their own hygiene. I have lots of patients that worry about their toes not being painted, I tell them that is not my focus and I sure appreciate their thoughtfulness. It is a gift yet we tend to notice it more when it is missing rather than when it is present. It is taken for granted. So many things in life are like that, we tend to appreciate them when they are gone. I sure am missing the stability of an executive branch of government following the guidelines of our 3 branches of government. This is unsettling as my wise friend just shared. That is so true. It is unsettling when we see folks that are not able or willing to care for their hygiene and it is unsettling to see the society we knew change so quickly. What are the gifts we are now missing? Just like the lack of personal hygiene it can take a few days to be rather apparent. I am missing security, honesty and a premium placed on the human being through health, research empathy and kindness.
I am headed to DC next week, as the AAN State Captain, to advocate with my fellow Ohio Neurologist for my patients living with neurological diseases. I have practiced Neurology for 30 years. I am beyond blessed by the amazing folks, aka “patients”, that have enriched mine and my families’ life. We are all patients in some sense, hopefully preventative medicine wise yet many are dealing with small and large medical issues. I find advocating for those living with neurological diseases and those that care about them to be quite an honor. I am unsettled that even the dementia information was taken down on the CDC website. It takes a real life story to bring the trials, tribulations and wins of our patients to life. What patient story comes to mind from this past week? Which one stuck with you? Feel free to share your concerns about those living with neurological diseases, I am glad to bring them to our representatives and senators. Feel free to email me at thebrainfresh@gmail.com, I can share stories with the staffers, the young folks that work in the Reps and Senators offices, review all the bills and advise them how to vote. We are all active parts of the system.
You matter. A shower is a renewing way to honor the gift of personal hygiene. We cannot expect one shower to last a year. Championing change is a renewing way to honor the gift of humanity. We also cannot expect champions of change to work one day a year. Brighten your neighborhood and workplace by championing change. Gift your community hope, growth mindset and connection.
