Complicated things tend to stop our actions... let's focus on what we know when it comes to leadership development and professional wellbeing.
Stop magical thinking, the mind body connection is your neck.
Leadership strategies from the chin down matter too.
I love to find a new book for travelling, they fuel my expectations and excitement of new info, fun and insights! During this precious open time I love to jump into that new book and soak it all in. Sometimes I go for historical fiction, self help, leadership or business. I like to keep my learning from different perspectives, so I widen my lens and limit my risk of learning only from medical texts. In medicine, we learn business is bad and medicine is good. This is a false choice, healthcare is a business. Age helps me understand that life is not either/or, there are lots of “yes/ and” situations.
I have started digging into business books and I recently found a “classic”, the HBR book On Mental Toughness, one of HBR’s “must reads”. It says, “If you read nothing else on mental toughness, read these definitive articles from Harvard Business Review.” I jumped right into this treasure! I enjoyed the lessons in the articles so much I was wildly taking notes and I decided to make a video series to help share the actionable nuggets that were written about over 10 years ago. This is a frustration of mine, there are answers out there for a joyful meaningful professional journey yet they are veiled in textbooks and manuscripts. I share one of the videos below and more are available on my YT channel… check it out here (https://www.youtube.com/@brain...) I actually love reading these books, summarizing the recommended steps and sharing them with you on YT and in my Distraction Busting Challenge to beat frustration and build impact. Actionable insights bring clarity, feel great, freeing and help my life feel “rich” as I now have a clear nonstressful path. Check out the insights and tools and please let me know which one is your favorite.
I personally love the one that suggested the parallels of leadership development and elite athlete development. In that article, “The Making of a Corporate Athlete”, they list ways to build one’s leadership capacity in all spheres: physical, cognitive, emotional and spiritual. It made so much sense to me that a holistic approach to leadership development is the key. They clearly state that thinking only from the chin up in regards to leadership development is short sighted. I frequently am perplexed at how folks tend to complicate the mind-body connection, it is not complex, it is your neck. We cannot forget the needs of our whole person as a leader. We are connected from the mind to the body. Leaders need to think about their leadership development skills like an athlete would, set short goals in all holistic components and stop the magical thinking that your physical state does not influence your intellectual abilities as a leader. It is so logical, yet, of course, as humans we are not only logical, we are also emotional and that side of us tends to rule! So check out the complete video series. I will share a few with you so you can get a sense of the power of these leadership lessons and of course I share my 2 cents from the neuroscience perspective. You got this… remember your leadership development should not only include the chin up, stay holistic in your skill building and take the lessons from various disciplines like medicine and business to strengthen your leadership foundation.
PS- I did make the videos while in Jamaica, so the scenes are quite relaxing!
