Emotions rule, there is no emotion school! I have attended a beautiful ceremony and still had negative emotions the next day! Brain tips help!
Weddings and Feeling Frustrated, do these go together?.
We went to the most beautiful wedding this weekend. It helped me slow down, appreciate those around me and realize life is so precious. It was the kind of wedding that is super lovely and even had fun dancing.
Then the next day I felt so frustrated.
I did not know why I felt so frustrated.
I sat in it for a while.
I was crabby.
Then I journaled.
I realized I don't always know the next step and that feels uncertain and scary.
Then I was like wait… I know neuroscience.
My “moods” may be my physical state too, I was tired, we stayed up late. I have to honor that my body needs rest and care.
I wrote my feelings as I learned emotional awareness is key to healthy living. I wish there was “emotion school”, but I have yet to find one! I don’t have to like my emotions or fix them, just know them. All these feelings poured out.
I started to use the power of realizing I can change the “story” in my thoughts.
I told myself I have figured out other things in the past.
I envisioned the day I wanted and then saw the barriers, realizing the barriers thankfully gets the brain working on solving these barriers.
I reminded myself of times when things went well and when I met amazing helpful folks along the way.
I reminded myself the journey is the key, not the goal.
I reminded myself of the interesting things I am learning in this book I am reading, “Stay Hungry and Kick Burnout in the Butt” by Dr. Steven Berglas. He reminds the reader that we all have a 7 year itch and will need a new challenge in our lives. Even the most perfect job or perfect relationship (if there was just a thing) will feel stale, our dopamine wants some highs, some “wows” like falling in love. Just like that wedding, all those positive emotions, they feel amazing.
He instructs that we need to challenge ourselves and enjoy the journey. Dr. Berglas refers to “generativity”, this is an interesting word to me, he is referring to the fact that we should always be teaching and mentoring to improve the next generation. He states that this teaching and mentoring will actually help us psychologically and physically, we feel better and are more healthy when we help our community. I have seen this in other studies as well, volunteering has been linked to strong social connections and improved long term health.
Today,
I hope you give yourself the rest and care that you need today.
Today is special, it is the only today we will ever have.
May you enjoy the journey.
Please consider being a teacher, mentor or volunteer at some level, this is linked with improved levels of thriving, living a full life.
You got this.
Take time to sit and figure out what is going on.
Partner with your amazing neuroscience, learn some daily tools to understand it and work with it.
I am glad to walk with you on this journey and support you with new simple life long insights into our complex brains.
It feels empowering to have insight into our neuroscience as it does not come with a manual.
There is no emotion school.
I sure needed one!
I have studied neuroscience from all angles and boiled it down to simple daily actions that can help us learn how to partner with our brain for more creativity, confidence and clarity of where to put our time and limited energy.
Sometimes life has a way of showing you things to give you that lovely “push” to get to a new level of understanding.
