How do you define team wellbeing?

I appreciate the definition of a society’s well being per the World Health Organization.

A society’s well-being can be determined by the extent to which it is;

1. resilient

2. builds capacity for action

3. Is prepared to transcend challenges

I believe we can determine if a team has wellbeing by assessing these 3 same features: resiliency, capacity for action and preparation to transcend challenges.

I am giving a talk in Chicago next week at the American College of Healthcare Executives Congress. I am fortunate to be speaking with Dr. Marzena Buzanowska, who is the mastermind of our team, and Dr. Tiffany Love, who is the seasoned C suite healthcare leader. I have learned so much from both of my colleagues. I am focusing on the well-being of the team at our ACHE talk.

My talk is entitled: “Complex Nature of Achieving Team Wellbeing, the Neuroscience Perspective”

(If you are attending #ache24, please join us on Wednesday 2:00 pm!) For our session, The Neuroscience -based strategies to Navigate your team Dynamics Through Positive Conflict resolution, inclusive culture building and achieving team wellness.

The real question… Is achieving team wellbeing complex?💡

The definition of the WHO of society’s well being suggests it will provide resilience tools today, give it capacity for action and stand ready to transcend challenges of tomorrow. We need these capacities for our teams today, resilience, capacity and preparation. How do we help our teams have the “edge” to persevere and innovate? I am hearing about many tired and overworked teams. I love reading neuroscience focused literature on team wellbeing. There are some very insightful and instructive manuscripts with various strategies for team wellbeing. Team wellbeing starts with the leader. Harvard Business Review had some classic articles that focused on training and rituals of the leaders to first “train” and find their wellbeing “edge” and then help their team find that “edge” of wellbeing. I will be sharing the rituals to put into place to be sure they have foundational skills as a leader so they can share the wellbeing rituals with their team. It can be simple, in my opinion, simple is not easy. Foundational wellbeing rituals can lead to enhanced capacity in both the leader and the team. Less may indeed be more! When the leader and team well being is not in place one can expect lower innovation, productivity and capacity to change. Change is the only constant, “business can be brutal” is a quote I heard on a call this week. Leaders have many challenges and leading the team is one of them. Be sure to be intentional about your weekly plan; check for physical, cognitive, emotional and service based rituals in your week for intentional personal and team wellbeing. 🧠

Please comment below- simple or complex- Is team wellbeing simple or complex? Being intentional can help set the weekly rituals for foundational personal and team wellbeing. ☮️

You got this! 🤓

Don’t leave wellbeing to luck, this St. Patrick’s Day, be intentional about what matters to you, set the weekly rituals in place for you and your team's wellbeing success. Imagine that your team is ready with innovative ideas for the “edge” that you need to solve that next challenge headed your way. Team wellbeing is the key to supporting their “edge”. 🤔
