What if all we needed was the know the framework to boost our self efficacy or our ability to believe in our own success to help this world!!
Self efficacy, how this shocked me.
I was doing research, many years ago, for a clinical program I was building. I was reading related manuscripts and this word came up that was new in this context for me. The word was self efficacy. I was reading about Multiple Sclerosis and wellness for patients, what did we know and what did we still need? A PhD nurse researcher, Dr. Alexa Stuifbergen, had studied the level of self efficacy in MS patients, if it was higher, more patients were still employed. The level of self efficacy did not relate to physical abilities. Self efficacy was quite powerful in these patients’ lives. It was a new concept for me at that time. I think it builds off the “if you believe it they will come” motto. Self efficacy is defined as your own belief in your ability to succeed, per a Canadian Psychologist, Albert Bandura. I have used the self efficacy scores in resident wellness studies and in my coaching programs. It was shocking how powerful it is to believe that we can succeed and that we know 4 components to self efficacy. We can take that first step of believing we can succeed and we are one step closer to success. There are 4 components of self efficacy: skill building, modeling, pep talks and positive emotions. We need models, we need positive self talk , we need to build our skills over time and we need to be aware of our current emotional state and how it will influence our success.
Were you familiar with the self efficacy term? Where do you see its role in your future success and performance? How about your teams’s future success and performance? It is so wonderful that amazing researchers have spent time writing grants to study this in detail and share the outcomes so that we can learn from these frameworks.
I have built an Empowerment framework of empowerment for the women docs that I coach. We walk through it slowly, like stepping stones across a river. We all need to build skills, see models of what could be, soak in pep talks and know the power of our positive emotions. We need each other to move forward successfully. No woman is an island.
Let’s build each other’s self efficacy, there are many challenges we face today and tomorrow, set your self efficacy framework in place.
What skills are you currently building?
How do you build your self efficacy?
Who do you model? Who do you envy- you may want to start there.
Do you give yourself and others pep talks, this matters!
Know your emotional state and the power it has on your work performance and skill building.
One step at a time, we can all build our self efficacy or freedom to live fully.
Here is my latest YT video sharing my goal and tactic setting system to save cognitive overload and build self efficacy.
Let’s use simple frameworks as the world needs you living freely in your strengths and gifts.
