Permission slip to focus on navigating the risk of burnout, aligning with your gifts and strengths and designing an interesting joy filled career.

  1. Your unique combination of gifts and strengths is yours alone, do not wait for your Chair or your manager to show you your path. Your path is unique.

  2. We all need to know that medicine is a high risk profession for burnout, it is OK to build skills to navigate this risk.

  3. We need to acknowledge that medicine continues to have inequalities in gender, race etc. We can be part of the solution.

  4. It is OK to have joy on the professional journey, fun is actually an important brain state!

  5. It is OK to give yourself time to grow and learn.

  6. It is OK to realize you will need extra sleep, rest and nutrition when you learn as this is an active brain state.

  7. It is OK to assess who is stealing your attention all day, start with your screen time and assess what you do during your days that does not use your full gifts and strengths.

  8. It is ok to realize that it will take resources, time and money, on your professional development, you can take it with you the rest of your life!

  9. It is smart to assess your culture and see if you agree with the values.

  10. It is fine to realize everyone is a teacher, we learn what to do or what not to do from everyone around us. Take the lesson and move on.

Find Joy and Purpose with Neuroscience Strategies

Along my nearly 30 years in medicine I have been looking for a framework or solution to guide me to keep work creative, purpose driven and exciting. I asked a bunch of women docs how they did it, how they kept work interesting and engaging. How did they keep a work- home balance? How did they navigate the culture of medicine? How do you find what actually matters to you? How does one find meaning and purpose? How do you find other women docs that are growing, joyful and supporting their communities? I would find suggestions and tips here and there yet the big questions remained for me. I thought I would reach out to women outside medicine and see if they had the answer. I built a group of women in business, together with my friend and CoFounder Ali Hively, my “Ocean 11” team as we chose women from all different industries. We met, we shared wins and challenges. I still was looking for a long lasting strategy for professional joy and purpose. I learned from and networked with groups of docs and women creating businesses. I dove deep into burnout, business, neuroscience and leadership literature to find the “pearls” in professional joy and purpose. I hired 2 business coaches. I then created a business, Brain Fresh LLC, to support the busy woman doc with neuroscience strategies to help them find joy and purpose that I wish I had earlier in my career. I co founded Brain Ops Group,with Ali Hively, to support women, physicians and nurses in their professional well-being plan. I have found a space to build, feel creative and use my strengths using neuroscience strategies and I want to share the strategies with you so that you can actually have clarity and creativity, less stuck and frustrated. I never understood why we don’t use brain tools for work growth. I never understand why we don’t get more clear on our values and strengths of our particular brain and use that to help others in this world. I am not OK with the status quo, women continue to have inequities in the workplace and this world needs us living fully in our neuroscience strengths. There is nothing worse than going to school for 20 years and then feeling stuck in the workplace culture. I believe in neuroscience strategies for joy, growth and creativity. I have developed a neuroscience framework focused on joy and purpose that I am sharing in “Hammock” with women docs.   1. I don’t have time now, can I buy this later? We, as women in medicine, are working in a high risk profession for burnout. I find learning new strategies has been quite helpful for work joy, balance and setting boundaries. I believe the time is now for new neuroscience strategies as it helped me immensely to find meaning again.

  2. I have lots of schooling, why would I need to learn more things? I agree, you have lots of degrees and years of experience toward becoming a doc. Believe it or not, I have looked deeply into other literature: business, tech, psychology etc to learn new strategies that I did not find in medical training. I hope you join me in Hammock to learn to support your amazing brain and feel the advantages of knowing how to fine tune your amazing neuroscience strengths.

  3. I like to learn while exercising, will there be an audio only version? Yes there will be, enjoy your walk and learning!

  4. How much time will I have to spend on this, I am strapped for time? The great news is that Hammock is a 9 step framework, you will soak in the 9 steps on your own time. You can practice one new strategy each week or take your time over many months.

  5. Why is Hammock a monthly membership? We know learning is a multistep process.
