Negotiations, Heart rates and Brains

Negotiations cause the best of us to feel nervous and scared. I share how I set my brain prior to a negotiation and recommendations from experts.

Negotiations are tricky.

I wish there was more clarity around negotiations.

Just saying the word gets my heart rate up a bit.

I need to practice my brain setting practices, I call brain priming, to help me address this tricky subject.

I give lectures on this and it still gets my heart rate up.

It is a threat to my value.

It is a threat to my worth.

It is a discussion where we both can succeed and get what we would like.

It is a thought process.

Brain power towards a successful negotiation is needed.

I approach most challenges with my bias toward neuroscience so let’s dig in.

There are experts on negotiations and I love to learn from them as I like to take all the possible tools and use them to build a successful discussion to negotiate for myself and advise those I care about.

How do you handle negotiations?

It seems to be a mind game.

If I call it a discussion, that helps my heart rate come down so I can think of the other person’s goals and negotiation style.

If I stay in the threat mode, I cannot think of all the options.

Let’s brain prime first, schedule fun, don’t overwork yourself prior to a negotiation. Let’s protect our “melon”, avoid distractions and focus on what our brain needs to see all the options. Let’s learn how to fine tune our emotions each day and stay in a positive emotional balance so we can see all of the options.

Let’s align with our values and strengths and think of the long game, what is our ultimate goal?

What are we good at?

What is meaningful to us?

What do we know about the person we are negotiating with, find out their negotiation style. Ask around, gain insight about what is important to them.

Think about what is most important to you and to your negotiation partner.

Build a support team around you so that you can be held accountable and learn from other’s negotiation experiences.

Anger toward negotiation is usually a value issue, you may feel devalued, write about why you are angry. Anger is a secondary emotion, meaning usually we are hurt first and then feel angry, think “fight or flight” . The flight is the need to get out of here due to a threat, anger is similar.

Knowing some brain tools can help us navigate negotiations.

We all want to belong, if we feel like we do not belong we want to leave. ( think “flight”)

We all want to feel we have value and meaning in what we do each day.

Jobs bring us meaning in our societies.

Simon Sinek recommends that we do not focus on the data on the average salary, equal pay during a negotiation and instead consider thinking of your job as a career and a continuum. Think of your job not as an event yet more as a continuum.

His example;

“My aspiration is to stay with the organization.

I have been here for _____ years.. I have been loyal… .can you help me figure out a path to remain here to get me to ____ salary.”

This way there is no room for “no”.

The path may be yes or instead there are targeted goals… to work you toward that salary.

PS- I would still look up national and regional salaries so that you are informed and can set goals and use data to love forward.
