Holidays throw everything off, sleep, food schedules and rest time! Here are 12 steps to keep the holidays balanced!

The winter holidays are HERE! 

To me that means a mix of things- busyness and relaxation, laughs and tears, meaning and memories, joy and anger, vacation and new starts, many contradicting emotions. 

Emotions are part of holidays. 

I would like to gift you some thoughts on how to rebalance  and or recharge during this demanding season. 

May you find one new strategy to remain centered on what is important to you  and yours. 

May you feel the warm lights of the season. 

I was reading an interesting book on Positivity written by a researcher who has studied positivity for years and has found that this ratio is the key to a productive, fun and positive life. Wow, that sounds great so what does she mean by that?

Dr. Barbara Erickson has studied humans and has found that when us humans have a positive to negative emotional balance to our day of 3:1 we have waaaay better days!

So she has studied this for years and recommends these things to help tip us over the 1;1; and send us into the 3:1 balance.

Ready for it? Believe it or not lots of the things are fun and you will be psyched that they matter so much!

She states very clearly that each day we have all the range of emotions, positive and negative and we can be intentional about tipping ourselves into the positive balance throughout the day.

Here we go.. .the actions we can all take to help us get into the 3;1 ratio to improve our days.

12 Days of Holiday Rebalance!  

Start one today and practice one new step each day!

I believe in YOU! 

  1. Be Open, experience the richness of the now, stay curious.

  2. Have high quality connections, this would include relationships that have respectful engagement, support, trust and play.

  3. Cultivate kindness, look for ways in the middle of your day to be kind to others.

  4. Distractions, keep these positive rather than negative, an example may be taking a walk when frustrated over sitting on your phone when frustrated.

  5. Dispute your assumptions, take an index card and write down the thought or assumption on one side and the facts to this assumption on the other, many times the thoughts are not backed by the facts.

  6. Find nature, add views of, walks in and books or images full of nature to your days.

  7. Learn and apply your strengths, she stresses that many of us have low self awareness and need to be more intentional about filling our days with activities that help us live in our strengths. (First you have to figure out your strengths)

  8. Mindful meditation, daily, goal 25 minutes.

  9. Meditate on loving kindness, research shows this dramatically helps our empathy and compassion (positive emotions).

  10. Ritualize gratitude, notice the gifts in your day.

  11. Honor endings, take time to consider your path and thank others when you have completed a project.

  12. Visualize yourself in 10 years feeling successful and content. Then think of the steps you need to put into place to achieve that level of success.

I highly recommend that book, Positivity by Barbara Fredrickson, PhD, it sure helps to provide a roadmap of steps to take to work on that daily balance of 3:1.
