Hesitation …
Have you ever found you had a great idea and then immediately told yourself 15 reasons why you should hold off on starting actions toward that idea? I am finding the power of the awareness of the space between the idea and then my thoughts about the idea. Neuroscience experts tell us our brains are already busy so they will give us lots of reasons to say NO to things. Our brains run all our body systems and are processing data points and recalling important situations. Brains are like busy parents, they mean well yet they are booked solid. The brain will also share with us all the possible things that can go wrong. So we hesitate…. has this happened to you?
When was the last time you gave yourself lots of reasons to say NO to an idea you had?
Let’s pause and notice the space between the idea and then our thoughts and emotions. I read a great book called Emotional Agility and the author, Susan David PhD, suggests we start to say “I am noticing xxx thoughts and I am noticing xx emotions”. When we name the thoughts and emotions and only notice them, we do not need to listen to them, we gain self awareness. We may realize why we have that hesitation to proceed with new skill building or new goal pursuit. Brain wonder can help our goal pursuit, we can notice what our brain is up to and learn to leverage what it needs to proceed in our goals and skill building.
I interviewed an Executive Coach, Stacy Brookman, who has a model for building this self awareness of confidence vs hesitation.

Check out the video, she also recommends being aware of the space after the idea and where the thoughts and emotions are present and can powerfully determine our actions. I was recently in an exercise class and I did not trust my left leg in this exercise of standing up on a high level stool while I held weights. I used this process, what are my thoughts here? Has my left leg felt weaker? Why do I not trust this leg in this motion? I tried it with my left leg with no weights and could do it so I tried it with weights and it was OK, hard but OK. I am not sure where a mistrust of my left leg came from yet there it was. Thoughts and emotions yet no facts. I proceeded cautiously after challenging the thoughts and emotions. It was OK, it was hard actually yet that is the point of an exercise class! So let’s notice those points of hesitation towards something that is important to you. Take a break to notice. I personally need to cheer myself on with lots of you can do this in repeat, I highly recommend those cheers. They drown out the doubters.
Build confidence with strategy.
Pause and notice the thoughts and emotions.
Challenge the facts towards the thoughts and emotions.
Cheer yourself on and repeat!
Your brain needs support, cheer it on today.
Give yourself space for awareness then move closer to what is important to you.
I believe in you.
