Do we let others create a new story or do we judge and limit their growth?
Halloween is such a great time to tell a new story
Our brain loves to take facts and place them in a story. We easily remember facts in a story. We tell stories after grabbing various facts and putting them together into a story. Halloween is a great time to tell a new story. We went to a fun Halloween party and were surprised by the range of costumes. I loved the thieves of the Louvre, they even brought a ladder and a scooter, so contemporary! Dan from Forest Gump was amazing and dedicated to his story, wheelchair and hiding his legs, 10/10 on creative. We were New York Times Puzzles, Wordle and Strands, we borrowed that idea from my daughter so she gets full credit.
It makes it easy for our brains to take facts and place them in a self created and often inaccurate story. I have stories of what a politician is, yet I am now running for a local office. I heard a beautiful TED talk of a Mayor who was a young Mom sharing why she ran for office and the reasons she shared widened my story of a politician. She shared how she advocated for others as a Major and appreciated the mission based work. We try to take facts and make our own story. Where do we need to allow people to be multidimensional or to have more room to tell their own story? Who do we need to give more space and try to stop putting them in a tight story? We know our brain loves stories so we can help our brains by reinforcing vitality and growth. We can give folks room to do multiple things at one time thereby building their growing story. We can harness the fun and creativity of Halloween and give people the room to tell their new and growing story.
We may not be accurate in the story we come up with and that may have to do with safety. Brains are always trying to determine who is safe or not safe. So we may create a story from a few data points and say someone is “good” or “bad” and try to create a tight story. It could be that the person is growing into a new identity or new skill and their story is expanding. Just like the creative couple that dressed like the Louvre thieves, use context clues, bend the boundaries and be creative in your story telling. Give people room to stretch and grow and let them tell their ever changing story.
Whose growing story can you support today?
Give them a call.
Support is key as learning and growing are uncomfortable.
Allow growth.
Growth is easier when they feel safe and supported.
Stories can expand with bravery and support.
Vitality is growth, stretch your own story today.
I believe in you.
