Is your bandwidth full? How do you find time for what is important to you?
Bandwidth
I am on my 6th day of hospital service so I am going to keep this short. My bandwidth is on my mind. We also call this cognitive load, what is “on your mind”. What is needed and what is optional? What do you leave in your bandwidth during busy times? What gets kicked off your bandwidth during busy times? Who decides? Does your tired self decide? Do you set things in place before busy times start? I was on a coaching call recently in my Women Doc 5 day mindset challenge and all the docs on the call decided nutritional planning and cooking gets off the list when we are busy. There was lots of talk about eating chips when on call or when tired. How can we set ourselves up for success? I read an older article from Harvard Business Review that encouraged rituals. These were called nonnegotiable actions that are set into place for holistic success. They recommended physical, cognitive, emotional and service rituals in place to live a complete holistic life. It all sounds great until one is on call. How do you keep important rituals in place during busy times?
Tips from the HBR article:
Habits, starting super small and staying relatively consistent, perfection is a lie.
We all need actions in those 4 spheres: physical, cognitive, emotional and service to live a holistic full life. One small ritual a month could count as well. Reasonable goals are best.
Give yourself grace, again perfection is not real and yet our biology has needs, please eat, sleep, feel and move your amazing body. Giving to others and realizing how your work impacts one person and or a larger community helps meet our “service” ritual.
You matter.
Your rituals matter.
Live intentionally, your bandwidth is up to you.
You got this.
I am off to my fav exercise class then I will round.
Then I will celebrate my husband on Father’s day, my adult kids planned the whole thing, I just show up!
Share your rituals… what are your nonnegotiables? Where are the opportunities to build that intentional life?
Start one small new ritual today and fill your bandwidth with what is important to you and yours.
Thanks for all that you do to make this world a better place.
I believe in you, your hope and your expertise.
Mary
